Urbanguides is an architectural excursion agency from Rotterdam.
Their local guides are experts in navigating the city and
highlighting both the industrial heritage and the contemporary
architecture of Rotterdam. While working there as a guide, I was
approached to design their identity.
Design, Photography, Code
In an effort to condense some of the urban and architectural ideas
into one identity, we decided upon the concept of modularity. The
guide part is static, yet the nouns that precede are playfully
interchanged, giving the combined words new meaning and the company
a possibility to branch out.
The colour palette was based on the colours of the iconic Kronan
bikes that the company uses for their tours; green & red.
Supplementary colours were added to make make the identity a bit
more vibrant and lively. Shapes, icons and other decorative elements
were kept minimal.
The website design further expands on the idea of modularity, having
their large portfolio of tours displayed in a modular block grid of
various sizes.
Arte Illuminandi is the portfolio & blog of artist Jaap Boerman. The
subjects of his work are the decorative aspects (illustrations,
calligraphy) of medieval manuscripts and the study and collection of
ancient pigments. His work consists of replicas, own designs and
commissions.
Design, Photography, Code
Apart from his craft work, he hosts several courses in 'medieval
illumination’ in and around the Netherlands and Belgium. My role was
to document his work, providing a platform on which to share his
work and extensive knowledge on the subject, within the frame of a
website.
Many manuscripts have beautiful decorations that are illuminated
with gold. They are bound in beautiful richly decorated book
bindings. It is precisely this visual and the process that together
form the starting point of his new identity.
The minimalist design of the website was done intentionally to put
the focus on the decorative works. The website was set up as both a
digital gallery of his work, as well as an archive of the writings
on the techniques of medieval illumination.
I’ve been working for Secrid for four years as a digital designer.
In the last two years, together with a team of professionals, we’ve
worked on designs to shape the identity of the new & upcoming
website. What follows are my contributions.
In my several years working for Secrid I started as a print &
allround designer, before I switched to digital design. Since I've
always had an interest in code, I worked closely with several
developers and had a chance to improve my own programming skills in
the process.
The majority of content I’ve designed for the company includes
booklets, posters, webpages, campaign visuals, social media content
& videos. Apart from static design, I’ve done some simple animation
work as well. However lately, my focus has been soley on webdesign
and coding.
Strangers Together is a blog that curates content with the aim of
sharing the owners’ views on lifestyle, art and design. The content
is carefully curated and rooted in everyday life. Apart from
function as a blog the website also offers services in design and
branding, and includes a webshop.
Design, Code
The owners approached me to design and develop a blog on which they
could share their stories on. The design was done in collaboration
with the owner, who is an art-director himself. My role in this was
to translate the designs into a workable webdesign, and programming
it.
